Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (Matt. 6:28-30)

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus directs us to faith by observing God’s care of the natural world.

On another mountain a botanist introduced my family to a vast array of wildflowers. Then, he took out a jeweler’s glass to show us the details of individual flowers. Under magnification, we could observe the intricate engineering and amazing design of each flower down to the cell level.

Each flower marvelously represented the hand of the Creator. We had admired the beauty that we could naturally see, now we marveled even more at the engineering and art the jeweler’s glass revealed.

Then, the botanist directed our gaze to the surrounding mountains and said, “The hand that designed each flower’s cells also made these great mountains and every molecule of every rock.

It was hard to take it all in, but we got the message: even to glimpse God’s care for his creation, is to marvel at the hand that created us and carries us through his intricate design for our lives. Such a hand can be treasured and trusted, especially since it sent Jesus to tell us about the heart behind the hand.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for reminding me that the heart that provides for the lilies is behind the hand that provides for me. The hand that received the nails for me reveals how much your heart can be trusted to design what is best for me.
